A lamp offered to the wealth-bestowing deities — for prosperity grounded in virtue.
The Treasure God Light is offered at Veil Parasol Temple in connection with the wealth-bestowing deities of the Vajrayana tradition — most often the five forms of Jambhala (黃, 黑, 紅, 白, 綠) and other deities whose particular function is the increase of resources, livelihood, and the conditions for virtuous activity. The lamp burns before the wealth deity's representation as a sustained offering and a quiet prayer for the donor's material wellbeing — not merely for accumulation, but for the resources that allow generosity, family support, study, retreat, and the patronage of the Dharma.
In the Buddhist understanding, wealth is not opposed to spiritual practice. It is a karmic fruit — the visible expression of past generosity and present diligence — and it is also a tool. A practitioner with sufficient resources may support elderly parents, raise children well, sponsor ceremonies and retreats, give to those in difficulty, and create the outer conditions for inner cultivation. The wealth deities of Vajrayana exist precisely to bless these conditions, treating prosperity not as an end but as a means by which virtue extends.
The Treasure God Light is therefore not a transaction. The practitioner does not purchase fortune; rather, they offer the lamp as an act of devotion, with the trust that the wealth deity will support those conditions that allow continued generosity and virtuous activity. The most common framing for sincere practitioners is: may resources come, and may I use them in ways that benefit my family and the Dharma. This intention is what is honoured.
Practitioners commonly offer the Treasure God Light:
- For households facing financial difficulty or transition
- For those starting a new business or vocation
- For families with significant ongoing responsibilities — elderly care, children's education
- For those seeking to support the temple, the lineage, and broader charitable activity
- As an annual offering of devotion and conscious livelihood
The Treasure God Light is offered for the period of the donor's choosing — most commonly a full year, often beginning at the lunar new year. Sponsors may submit the names of family members or businesses to be included. The lamp is consecrated before the wealth deity's image and maintained by the temple. At the close of the offering period, merit is dedicated to the sponsor's family, the success of virtuous endeavours, and the wellbeing of all sentient beings — with the prayer that resources flow where they may benefit the most.
